Give Her Up To The Gods

This week has seen Cork play host to the inaugural Solstice Festival, an offshoot of the Cork Midsummer Festival.

As part of the festival, Dublin-based performance colective Come As Soon As You Hear have teamed up with the festival organisers to present Human Sacrifice, an evening of DJs, dancing and virgin bloodshed this Sunday 19th of June.

Kicking off at 10pm at Murphy's Midsummer Nights at The Spiegeltent, the event will see a pretty young virgin pay the ultimate price as a gesture of gratitude to The Gods for a bountiful harvest.

Dress to distress and don't forget your dancing shoes as DJs Conor Behan and Joey Kavanagh will be soundtracking the slaying with a palette of pagan electropop. Tickets available here.

South By South West

Come As Soon As You Hear, the creative collective/pack of dossers I'm involved in, are very excited to announce our involvement in Solstice, a brand new initiative being run as part of the Cork Midsummer Festival this month.

The mini festival, organised by four young arts enthusiasts, will run from the 16th to the 19th of June and will showcase work by over 150 emerging artists in the fields of music, dance, theatre and visual art descend. Transforming the Old FAS Building in the heart of Cork city into a pop-up venue, Solstice will include over 30 performances and will run from 10am to 10pm each day.

We will be debuting a new show, Spurt, devised by Karl Watson and Dan Colley, as well as helping to liven up the festival's top secret closing party with something we've been working on for a few weeks. Check out the full programme here.

She Saved The World. A Lot.

This is probably going to be the last post of this nature I make on the blog (more about that soon) but I just wanted to let any Dublin-based people know that the collective I'm involved in, Come As Soon As You Hear, are throwing one of our parties in the Twisted Pepper tonight (Saturday).

It's called Hellmouth As Soon As You Hear and, as the name suggests, it's based on Buffy The Vampire Slayer.


There'll be DJ sets from the eminetly talented Frankie Grimes, Andrew Bannister and yours truly. As well as some old-school Buffy classics, expect to hear some of the following:

Bringing All The Boys To The Yard

Come As Soon As You Hear have teamed up with the Forward/Slash boys for a night of mayhem at The Bernard Shaw, this Thursday the 21st as part of the Beatyard Weekender.

From 8 o' clock, we'll have a selection of New Volta Film Club shorts, curated by Bob Gallagher, as well as CASAYH's interactive performance, which features flower crafts, fortune-telling and Facebook photography.

DJs Frankie Grimes, James McLoughlin, Haido, Eimear Fitzmaurice and kDamo will be soundtracking the evening with all manner of blissed-out beats.

Hip-hopper Bob Glynn will be playing some tunes, the enigmatic Lobster Boy will be putting his claws to use by whipping up some visual delights and, to top it all off, we'll be marking International Day of the Nacho.

Bernard Shaw drinks promos? Check. Free admission? Czech. Go getcha some.

Trouble was a brewing. Captain Trouble, that is, brewing her Come As Soon As You Beer, under the watchful eye of The Alchemist, Shadowcat, and Concussion. Their dastardly plan to turn the whole city of Dublin into aloof, cynical hipsters by way of poisonous elixir was well under way.

Helpful Girl, with the aid of her trusty binoculars, had those wretched villains well within her sights. She, alongside Basilisk, Lockjaw and Frostbite (known as The Hyper Friends) would thwart their evil plans once and for all. Now that you have Heard, Come join them in their quest to save our city!

Your mission:

Come to The Basement @ Clarendon House at 8:30pm and bring your own beer to counteract the poison. Here you will be given your Superhero name, and kitted out in appropriate garb, if you have not already done so. Then we will ambush The Twisted Pepper at 11pm sharp, and engage in a battle to end all battles.

When you hear the klaxon, that's your chance to grab the nearest sticker labelled "POW", "ZWANG", "KNARG" "ETC", and whack it on your enemies. So villains, heed our call! You can Run As Soon As You Hear but you can't Hide As Soon As You Hear. All my single superheroes, put your hands up, and Kick Some Ass As Soon As You Hear.

Shock To The System

If you're a Dubliner and on Facebook, chances are you've encountered the photography of Peter Fingleton.

Peter is still honing his craft at the National College of Art & Design but has already become one of the most sought after snappers in Dublin.

His photography forms the basis for much of his artistic output and he works freelance for various publications, but Peter's most widely known work is probably his distinctive and instantly recognisable nightclub photography.

Fed up of the constraints of having this work showcased on Facebook (and presumably the incessant tagging notifications) he has decided to launch a website, Sharp Shock, where he can present his work as he wants to.

The website gets its launch this coming Tuesday, 30th of March, in Dublin's Crawdaddy and guess what? You're invited. The event is being supported by Absolut Vodka, which means free cocktails for the early birds, and Eimear and I will be spinning some tunes to soundtrack the evening.

Underground Theatre

Based on what I've posted here over the past few months, you could be forgiven for thinking that Come As Soon As You Hear are concerned with little more than infiltrating the Dublin night life.

But, in fact, since long before we started swapping clothes and hosting chat roulette parties, Come As Soon As You Hear have been making plays. There have been plays at Electric Picnic, plays in the Project Arts Centre, plays in nightclubs and now there are going to be plays in The Basement.

The Basement is an underground performance and rehearsal space that has been our base of operations for the past year or so and the organisers of a series of 'Scriptscribe' workshops felt it was about time we included it in our plays.

Six writers (including yours truly) have drawn inspiration from The Basement and come up with an original 20 minute script. Some of these will eventually be performed in The Basement but, for now, we're hoping you'll come along and check out the scripts-in-progress.

This evening and tomorrow evening there will be rehearsed readings of the 20 min scripts in The Basement (Clarendon House, Clarendon Street, Dublin 2).

Come. Listen. Discuss. Wine. Whine.

Yes, it's the time of the month, where I plug the latest Come As Soon As You Hear party.

Chat As Soon As You Roulette is a clothes-swapping extravaganza that's gonna be broadcast live on Chat Roulette. It kicks off at 11pm this Saturday, the 20th of March.

The survival manual is as follows:

1. Come.
2. Do a sexy dance for the benefit of those watching you on their computer screens.
3. When the klaxon sounds, 'next' your clothes by swapping 'em with someone nearby.
4. Repeat steps 2 - 3 until you...
5. Come.
6. Exeunt.

Following the success of the Swap As Soon As You Hear event at Twisted Pepper, Come As Soon As You Hear are throwing a UV-themed extravaganza, inspired by the new rave revival that became synonymous with the first series of Skins circa 2007.

DJs Peter Fingleton of (C U Next Tuesday) and Frankie Grimes will serve up a heady mix of Indie and Electro and, as ever, there will be an interactive element to proceedings. Let's just say, if you're planning on coming, I advise sporting a T-shirt or top that you don't mind getting scrawled on...

The event kicks off at 11pm this coming Saturday, the 20th at Twisted Pepper. Entry on the door is €8 but you can get in for the discounted price of €5 if you put your name on this here guestlist.

Emerald Warriors

It's no secret that I am an embarrassingly avid Marina & The Diamonds fan and, as such, I'm delighted that Eimear and I have been given the chance to DJ at next Thursday's Listen | Love, which is serving as an album launch of sorts for her debut album, 'The Family Jewels'.

If you fancy hearing the album in full, a day before it officially hits the shops, as well as busting a move to tunes provided by DJs from Super Super Disco, C U Next Tuesday, Áit Ait and Come As Soon As You Hear, I suggest you haul your ass down to Tripod on the 18th.

Rumours abound that Ms. Diamandis will be making her own contribution to the celebrations but your guess is as good as mine as to what this might entail exactly.

The Come As Soon As You Hear juggernaut is gathering pace and we have a pretty diverse selection of events coming up in the next few weeks.

The first of these takes place this coming Thursday in The Bernard Shaw, Portobello, and is a celebration of The Letter K.

SWAP 'Til You Drop

Our first ever Come As Soon As You Hear club night, 'SWAP As Soon As You Hear', took over The Mezz @ Twisted Pepper last Saturday night and, boy, did we raise the roof.

I'll admit we were a tad concerned that the apocalyptic weather conditions would deter our potential swappers but, thankfully, the party population of Dublin are made of strong stuff and weren't prepared to let anybody snow on their parade.

New Year's Revolution

'SWAP as Soon as You Hear' is the first of a series of club nights with a twist being organised by Liana, Eimear and yours truly as part of Come As Soon As You Hear.

Liftoff is scheduled for next Saturday, the 9th of January at 10pm in The Mezz @ Twisted Pepper.

The idea is pretty simple:

1. Come.

2. Dance to the funky, funky beat.

3. When the klaxon sounds, swap an item of clothing with the person nearest you.

4. Repeat steps 2 - 3 until you...

5. Come.

6. Exeunt.

If you're reluctant to part with your threads, fret not. We'll have BAGS FULL of clothes you can throw on for swapping purposes.

Music on the night will be provided by the wonderful Alan Taylor of C U Next Tuesday, the masterful Killian Coyle and Come As Soon As You Hear DJs (probably me, Liana and Eimear).

I'll be posting up a flyer in the next couple of days that will get you in for a mere €5.
